THE PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY - ATHENS, SPETSES, MONEMVASIA

GREECE ANALOG INSIGHTS

This is the analog photographic itinerary of my journey to Greece on Automn 2017 ( You can find the digital log on separate blog entries:   City Diaries - ATHENS , SAILING IN GREECE 2017 and CITY DIARY ATHENS ( street photography ).

Travel is a kind of transformation or even transcendence ... I am practicing this aproach since many years and in different ways  ( travels and adventures ) ... first as a literary and philosophical approach  and in the last years as a visual / photographic investigation ... storytelling, travel and photography are ultimately and deeply interconnected ... I would formulate more  thoroughly and concisely my thoughts about this topic in another place ...

I had tree analog cameras on my bag and differnt rolls of film ( 135 and 120 ).

  • Zeiss Ikoflex Favorit ( 6x6 ) 75mm lens
  • Nikon FM2, Nikkor f1.2 50mm and Nikkor f3.5 28mm PC lenses
  • Mb612 - multiformat pinhole camera ( 6x6, 6x9, 6x12 )  I used 6x6 and 6x9 formats.

The images are subdivided in three sections
  • MONEMVASIA
  • SPETSES
  • ATHENS
at the end there is also an extra section "BEHIND THE SCENES" with some comments on the films I used and the post processing.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Back to the Darkroom - The journey ( to the end of Europe ) has just ended. Greece and Europe, I think, are again in an insecure turning point. Not the path which politicians, media and burocrats presents to us, but ruther a dark and dangerous one ...
I am back at work, making art ... analog photography is tough business, it demands dedication, skillfulness, patience, time, money and the result is poor and insecure, somehow it resembles the conditions of a journey or of life itself ... why I am doing this?
during the travel I had three cameras with me: a Nikon FM2 with Nikkor f3.5 28mm PC, the 6x6 Zeiss Ikoflex Favorit and the Mb612 multiformat Pinhole camera ( equiv. focal lenght ca. 20mm ) ... I used mainly Black and White film ( 25, 100, 400 ISO ) the slow films ( ADOX Pan 25 and Rollei Pan 25 ) for the pinhole camera, FUJI ACROS 100 and AGFA APX100 for the Ikoflex and  expired AGFA APS 400S for the Nikon FM2.  I also used a few ( color ) Kodak Portras ( both 135 and 120 ) ... at first I devoped the BW films ... I used the bigger 2500 series JOBO developing tanks in order to be able to develop 2 120 films simultaneously, but the reels are not so easy to load or at least I am not used to ...
Developing: for the 25 ISO films I used HC-110 Dilution G ( 1:119 ) for 22 min and I used HC-110 ( 1:63 ) for ca. 12min for the ISO 100 films.

I scanned the negatives with an EPSON V750 Pro scanner.
